    Prof. Kaminka is a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. He is also a member of the Multidisciplinary Brain Research Center, and the Institute of Nanotechnology at the university.  He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California (USC) and completed his postdoctoral research at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).  He is among the few Israelis that are Fellows of both the American and European Associations for AI, and is a recipient of the Israeli Landau Prize for Research Excellence. In addition to his academic work, he has experience as co-founder, CTO,  or advisor to several AI and robotics startups.

    Artificial Intelligence,  Robots, Teams, and Swarms

    Prof. Kaminka investigates and develops methods for artificial social intelligence.  He builds teams and swarms of  autonomous agents  and intelligent robots that reason, make decisions, learn from their experience, and improve. Using these methods, agents become better teammates, and robots in swarms learn to coordinate better. 

    The research has both  scientific value (e.g., current research into  using AI to study locust decision-making, or understanding how humans infer intentions of others) as well as  applications beyond the lab (e.g., robots for cleaning and mapping new areas, software agents for training simulations, personalized medical nanorobot treatments). 

    Key Research Areas:

    • Robot swarms using machine vision and reinforcement learning.

    • AI for new medical treatments,  using nanorobots (molecular robots).

    • Inferring the intentions of others from their actions (computational theory-of-mind).

    • LLM-based Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems

    • Multi-robot systems that cooperate and manipulate the world.

     Nature of the Research:

    Mostly empirical (experiment-based) research, with new theory emerging from the experiments, and developed further.  Some research is motivated by real-world applications, some by pure scientific curiosity.  

    Career Paths:

    Many M.Sc alumni found work in senior positions in startups and large companies, while others continue to do a PhD. Among the PhD alumni, some lead industry AI and robotics efforts  also as co-founders in C-level positions. Others found faculty positions in universities and colleges in Israel, USA, and Australia.
